The Real Developer’s Advantage

A reflection on 30 years of language shifts, and what still matters.

Past

In the mid-90s, I first got into computers not for the sake of technology itself, but because they were a tool to solve urgent real-world problems—like surviving hyperinflation in Brazil. Over time, I dove deeper into languages and frameworks, from FoxPro to .NET to Ruby, always chasing clarity and craft. But one thing never changed: the tools mattered less than the problems we solved.

Present

Earlier this year, I gave a talk that became this week’s post: 👉 Tool-Agnostic Problem-Centric The Real Developers Advantage

It distills five lessons that still guide me today: focus on problem-solving, communicate for clarity, leverage modern tools, learn from the community, and grow strategically.

And if you missed last week’s post, it pairs nicely: 👉 Two Instincts in a Developer’s First Impression — How our first reactions can open (or close) doors to growth.

Future

Looking ahead, I see my career looping back to its roots: using computers to solve people’s problems—without being consumed by technical complexity. That’s always been the real advantage, and with AI, it feels closer than ever.
